Early Results of Hybrid Total Hip Arthroplasty using a Fourth Generation Cementing Technique

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the early results of hybrid total hip arthroplasty using the fourth generation cementing technique.

Materials and Methods: One hundred and six consecutive primary total hip arthroplasties, with implantation of cemented femoral and cementless porous-coated acetabular components, were performed in eighty-five patients between 1998 and 2000. Six patients (eight hips) died and one (one hip) refused to follow-up, leaving seventy-eight patients (ninety-seven hips), with a mean follow-up of thirty-three months (range, twenty-four to forty-eight months). The mean age at the time of the index arthroplasty was fifty-seven years.

Results: The mean preoperative Harris hip score of 48.5 points improved to 94.3 points at the time of the final follow-up. The femoral cementing was classified on the postoperative radiographs as: grades A, B and C in 58, 38 and I hip, respectively. There was a `definite¢¥ femoral loosening with
`debonding¢¥ of stem hom cement. There was no loosening of the acetabular cup, with no hips having to undergo revision for aseptic loosening.

Conclusion: Hybrid total hip arthroplasty, using the fourth-generation cementing technique, provided excellent clinical and radiographic results, with no requirement for revision surgery at a minimum two-years of follow-up.
